How to Select the Right Banking Software for Your Business

It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

Banking software can help streamline your business operations, improve your customer service, and make your day-to-day life as an entrepreneur much easier. But there are many different banking software packages on the market, and they all promise to deliver excellent results. So how do you choose the best one? Start by asking yourself these questions about what you want from your banking software.

Understand your business model

To understand which banking software would be best for your business, you need to understand your business model. What type of business are you running? What are your professional or personal goals? What are your requirements? Understanding these aspects, if you’re a small-time local business owner with clients in one or two cities, an online bank might be a good way to avoid all the paperwork. National or international banks will likely offer a variety of services and amenities, but they will likely also require a higher level of commitment and be less low-maintenance than a small local bank. Of course, the trade-off is you have more services but also more fees, so that might not be a good idea.

Find an appropriate solution

Having decided what you need, it’s time to start searching for the right software package. Choosing the right software can be somewhat difficult, as there are many options available. Listed below are some tips for narrowing down your choices:

  • Look for software that offers a free trial. You can test out the features and see if it’s a good fit for your business.
  • Make sure the software is compatible with your existing banking system. Otherwise, you’ll have to go through the hassle (and expense) of switching over to a new system.
  • Consider whether you need on-premise or cloud-based software. On-premise solutions will take up more space on your computer than cloud-based solutions, but they’re also more secure. Cloud-based software might not require any installation at all, but make sure to do your research before making a purchase.
  • Evaluate customer service availability by looking for live chat hours and responsiveness from customer service representatives. If there are issues with the software, you want someone who is available to help solve them.
  • Check for integrations like SMS notifications so that you know when important events happen in your account.

Choose between cloud-based and on-premises solutions

First, choose between a cloud-based or on-premises solution. With a cloud-based solution, your software is hosted by the vendor and accessed via the internet. Cloud solutions, such as AWS and Microsoft Azure, are an attractive option if you want a robust service, but don’t have the IT infrastructure or you want to avoid upfront costs of licensing and hardware. On-premises solutions are installed on your own servers and accessed internally. This can be a viable choice if you have the technological capability to back it up or if you want more control over your data.

Identify future expansions

As your business expands, you’ll probably need to upgrade your banking software capabilities. Make sure you select a system that can scale to accommodate your future growth. Keep in mind that you may need additional features and more licenses for your customers in the future. Make sure the software integrates with your new programs too. If you’re considering starting an e-commerce site and want to accept credit card payments online, first find out if your current software is capable of handling the venture.

Keep an eye on costs

Considering banking software to reduce costs is important. Make sure you understand all of the fees. Keep in mind set-up fees, monthly fees, and per-transaction fees. Furthermore, you’ll want to consider whether the software is offered as a subscription service or is an outright purchase. Subscription models may offer more flexibility, but may also cost more in the long run. Once you’ve selected a banking software system, it’s important to monitor the associated costs. Track all the fees you pay and compare them to your budget on a regular basis.

When it comes to choosing banking software for your business, there are a lot of things to consider. But if you do your research and ask the right questions, you’ll be able to find the right solution.
